Pharmacy Overview

Prescription coverage for Select Health members is usually divided into four or five tiers, depending on the plan type. Each drug is covered under a specific tier, and each one corresponds to a copay or coinsurance amount.

  • Tier 1 - Lowest Cost (mostly preferred generic drugs)
  • Tier 2 - Lower Cost (mostly non-preferred generic drugs)
  • Tier 3 - Higher Cost (mostly preferred brand-name drugs)
  • Tier 4 - Highest Cost (mostly brand-name drugs
  • Tier 5 - Injectable Drugs and Specialty Medications

NOTE: Not all plans have a fourth or fifth tier. Some plans cover injectable drugs and specialty medication under medical benefits.

Generic drugs typically cost less than brand-name drugs and have lower copays/coinsurance. They have the same active ingredients, dosages, quality, safety, and strength as their brand-name counterparts. Learn more about U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for generic drugs.
