Tier 1 SGLT2 Medications Available for Medicare Patients

We are pleased to share that dapagliflozin and dapagliflozin-metformin, the generic equivalents of Farxiga and Xigduo, are now available as a Tier 1 medication and at no cost to Medicare Part D patients. Please share this update with your Medicare patients who are currently prescribed these or any SGLT2 medications (e.g. Brenzavvy, Invokana, Jardiance, Steglartro, Synjardy) as they may benefit from a generic, no-cost prescription. By prescribing the generic when needed, you can help improve access and encourage patients to take their medication as directed without financial obstacles.

As Tier 1 medications, these prescriptions are available at $0 and may be dispensed as an extended day supply of up to 180 days. This benefit allows eligible patients to receive a longer supply of their medication at no cost, helping to:

  • Reduce out-of-pocket expenses
  • Minimize pharmacy visits
  • Support consistent medication adherence

When appropriate, we encourage providers to consider extended-day supplies to help support medication adherence and reduce pharmacy visits for patients managing chronic conditions.
