Select Health, a nonprofit health plan serving more than one million members in Utah, Idaho and Nevada, recently announced Curt Howell as market president of the company’s Peaks Region. He will lead the development and execution of strategic initiatives as Select Health enters the Colorado health insurance market later this year.
In his role, Howell will be responsible for working with regulatory, legislative, and business stakeholders; investigating and sourcing new business opportunities; building new relationships within the community; and working with network provider partners (including Intermountain Health) to provide these new communities with affordable and high-quality health plans.
“Howell’s extensive regional and operational growth experience will elevate our presence and growth in the Colorado insurance market,” said Rob Hitchcock, President and CEO for Select Health. “His market development experience, along with his entrepreneurial and strategic guidance, will help leverage our opportunities in this new market, and advance our mission as we deliver accessible and value-based care to the communities we serve.”
Most recently, Howell served as multi-state market president at Bright Healthcare, where he had profit and loss responsibility for the employer group, marketplace, and Medicare Advantage (MA) products for 13 states. During his time there, he launched two new Medicare Advantage products in Arizona and Colorado, increased the CMS quality Star Rating by more than one point in less than a year, and launched a new marketplace line of business in Utah.
“Watching Select Health grow in recent years from the outside has been truly inspiring, and I couldn’t be more excited to be joining the team,” said Howell. “The health insurance industry is at a turning point, and consumers are looking for more from their health plans. I know we can do great things by bringing Select Health to new regions and am looking forward to leading this effort in Colorado.”
Additionally, Howell was the vice president of strategic development - east and west divisions at Fresenius Medical Center and held various executive and leadership positions at Leavitt Group Enterprises, Humana and UnitedHealthcare. Howell holds a Master of Health Administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia.
