Utility Benefit

Some Select Health Medicare plans include a monthly utility benefit designed to help eligible members with a qualifying chronic condition cover essential household expenses and reduce financial stress.

Pay for approved utilities like:

  • Power
  • Gas
  • Internet
  • Phone (monthly service fee)
  • Water
  • Sewer
  • Waste Management

Important Notes About the Utility Benefit

  • Some plans combine the Utility benefit with other benefits. Check the Evidence of Coverage for more information.
  • Cable, entertainment subscription services (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.), and the purchase of a phone/cell phone are not covered.
  • The Utility benefit is a Supplemental Benefit for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI). Members must have a qualifying chronic condition to access this benefit.

The Utility benefit is available on certain Select Health Medicare plans. If your plan includes this benefit, you can use your Benefits Mastercard® Prepaid Card to pay for approved utilities from a monthly allowance.

Use your Benefits Mastercard® Prepaid Card when checking out online to pay for an approved utility service.

If you are paying at a physical location, swipe your card for payment and select “credit” when prompted. Selecting “debit” will decline the transaction.

You can manage your Utility allowance by:

Once logged in, you can easily:

  • Review spending allowance balances and expiration dates
  • Review transaction history

Members with access to the Utility benefit will have a monthly allowance expiring on the last day of the month at 10 p.m. MST / 9 p.m. PST. Utility benefit funds do not roll over, so you have until the end of the month to use them. New funds will be available on the first day of the new month.

If your Benefits Mastercard® Prepaid Card (Flex Card) is declined, call NationsBenefits at 833-878-0232 (TTY: 711) and provide the date of your utility payment. A Member Experience Advisor will help investigate the reason for the declined transaction. Advisors are available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time.

If you paid for an approved utility and your transaction was declined, you may request for the merchant to be added to the Flex Card and submit a reimbursement request for an out-of-pocket purchase online through the Benefits Pro Portal at selecthealth.nationsbenefits.com. Reimbursements must be submitted by March 31 of the next plan year.
