13 Phrases You Should Say to Yourself Every Day

Positive thinking can have a huge impact on your physical and mental health.

Positive thinking can have a huge impact on your physical and mental health.

You've probably heard this phrase before, and it probably resonates more than you'd like to admit: “You are your own worst critic.” From work to sports, friendships to true love, it's not uncommon to be hard on yourself. That's why we could all use a little more positive self-criticism.

According to WebMD, “Self-talk can affect your outlook. It can either encourage you or make you feel bad.” Here are 13 phrases you should say to yourself every day:

1. TODAY IS GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY

Starting the day with a positive attitude and mindset can help you maintain them. When you hit tough times (and you will), you may be better prepared to weather them and keep looking at the glass half full.

2. I AM THANKFUL FOR LIFE

Gratitude improves life. Tell yourself daily that you are grateful for your life.

3. I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Great things happen when people like you take small steps to make a difference. Even if it's just smiling or complimenting more people every day, you can make a positive difference in the world.

4. MY PAST DOESN'T DEFINE ME

Have you made mistakes in your life? We've all made mistakes. Keep moving forward. Don't dwell on the past.

5. PEOPLE CHANGE

Remember the last point? Each of us is living proof that people can change. Expect the best from others and treat them the way you would like to be treated.

6. THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM

Your social media accounts can fool you into believing that everyone you know just bought a new car, had a great vacation, or bought a new house. That's not true. Remember, things aren't always what they seem, and comparing yourself to others isn't a rewarding way to live.

7. I DO MY BEST

Perfection isn't an option, but doing your best is. Do it.

8. I AM STRONG

This has nothing to do with how many push-ups and pull-ups you can do. It has everything to do with how strong you are as a person. How do you react to adversity? Do you challenge yourself? Chances are, you're stronger than you think and have overcome incredibly difficult things. Try telling yourself, "I can do hard things" or "I can do this."

9. I AM CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING MY GOALS

Setting goals is the key to success. No matter what success looks like to you, it's essential to set goals and remind yourself that you can achieve them.

10. OTHERS DON'T DEFINE WHO I AM

You define who you are by your actions and thoughts. Outside influences, no matter how close, don't define you.

11. I DON'T HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION

It's very common to jump to a conclusion when presented with information. You might ask yourself, "How could this person say that? How did that happen?" Does this sound familiar? Before you react, take a deep breath; you probably don't have all the information.

12. I AM LOVED

Sometimes it's hard to convince yourself of this, but it's absolutely true. Someone loves you very much.

13. LIFE GOES ON

Some things are within your control, and others are not. Don't sweat the small stuff or things you can't control. Hang in there and remind yourself frequently that life goes on.

Whether you're training to achieve your fitness goals or want to transform your overall well-being, positive self-talk can help you get there. Start with the phrases mentioned above and remember, you can do it!
