How to Plan A Perfect Picnic
Gone are the days of smashed sandwiches and warm lemonade. Become the picnic champion you've always wanted to be.
It’s time to get serious about picnicking. No more are you constrained to a bunched-up blanket, a hoard of ants, a watermelon flytrap, and some warm deli meats. Times have changed. You’ve changed. You’re wiser, you’re ready, and you’re serious about picnics.
Your kids hate your macaroni salad. Your husband is sick of coleslaw. How do you win? Ditch the labor-intensive salads and up your food game. Start with a cheese board and a cheese knife, then swing by your local grocery store, and grab an assortment of cheeses. While you’re there, pick up some crackers, fig jelly, grapes, and French bread. Let your friends and family experiment with cheeses and other toppings—it’s more creative than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You won’t have to do much meal preparation because your friends and family will be assembling their food themselves.
Pack all of your fixings in a fun picnic basket to make transporting everything easier.
Mix it up by bringing seltzer water or low- or no-sugar fruit drinks. Remember to pack ice to keep your beverages cold and refreshing.
Grab a citronella candle and some matches—you’ll have a warm glow lighting your picnic base, but you’ll also keep your area free from mosquitoes and flies. Flies will undoubtedly be drawn to your impeccable cheese board, so be sure to buy some pop-up food tents to keep bugs away.
Keep everyone in the family busy with a game of kickball, a fun scavenger hunt, Frisbee, or a water balloon toss. Or take some time to go a nature walk and point out the many wonders of where you live.
Utah might just be the world’s most perfect place to picnic. If you don’t know where to go, head to your local park and practice your picnic strategy before branching out. We love:
During the summer, there are tons of free outdoor movies showing all over Utah. There’s nothing better than having a picnic while watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with a gorgeous view of the mountains in the background.
Outdoor picnics are one of the best things about summer. Grab a large, thick blanket to lounge on, a picnic basket packed with delicious meats and cheeses, and a couple of Frisbees for the kids, and go. Life’s too short to put off picnics!
