5 Lunch Foods Wreaking Havoc on Your Body
As Americans, we love our food. But we really love our fast food. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2007 to 2010 Americans consumed 11.3 percent of total daily calories from fast food.
In an effort to help us all become a bit more conscientious about our dining choices, here are five common lunch foods wreaking havoc on our bodies.
Take one piece of fried chicken from a common fast-food restaurant or grocery deli, and we’re looking at more than 500 calories, 30 plus grams of fat, and a whopping 1,000 plus milligrams of sodium. Proceed with caution.
It may be one of America’s favorite fast foods and a staple at sporting events, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for our bodies. An average hot dog contains 30 plus grams of fat, approximately half of which is saturated fat (the bad kind).
Wait, really? A deli sandwich can’t be that bad. Think again. Deli meats, or lunch meats, are packed with sodium. In fact, a three-ounce serving has approximately 1,000 milligrams of sodium. Let’s not forget the eight to ten grams of saturated fat to go along with that serving size.

Burger and fries
“But, but, it tastes so good,” we tell ourselves. An average burger contains about 500 calories. Couple that with some fries and you’re looking at 200 to 250 more calories. But then the soft drink calls to us, and now we’re looking at around 1,000 to 1,200 calories for the combo. Eating like this regularly could increase our chances for high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
No! Did we really just bring pizza into the mix? Pizza silently wreaks havoc on our bodies with more than 600 milligrams of sodium and ten or more grams of fat (five of which are saturated fat), and that’s just one slice.
Eating too much of these common lunch foods can raise blood pressure and potentially lead to cardiovascular disease, which is a main cause of disease and death in America, according to the American Heart Association. Next time you go out to lunch or pack something from home, think twice before eating one of these popular foods.
