4 Compelling Reasons to Eat Breakfast

The word breakfast means just what it spells. The purpose is to “break” a “fast.” Naturally, our bodies fast while we sleep, and our metabolisms take a break too. When we get up in the morning, our metabolisms and bodies need a kick start to the day—breakfast is the solution.

Here are four compelling reasons why you should eat breakfast.

Breakfast gives you essential nutrients to start your day

We want our bodies to run on fuel—not fumes—to start the day. Ali Spencer, a Registered Dietician at Intermountain’s LDS Hospital, said it’s important to think about balance when building a breakfast.

Spencer said, “Include foods that are going to provide both protein and carbohydrates. This is a good rule of thumb for all your meals, but a great way to start your day off right.” She continued, “To speed things up on your busy mornings, try using foods that you can make ahead of time and that can be served cold or reheated easily.”

Like Spencer, Ashley Hagensick, a Sport Dietitian at Intermountain’s TOSH facility, agrees that breakfast is important. She encourages incorporating the three P's into every breakfast routine. 

    • Protein: Favor eggs and Greek yogurt instead of cold cereal
    • Portions: Target around 300-500 calories for breakfast
    • Planning: Plan ahead so that you have time or quick options for breakfast 

    Breakfast enables effective morning exercise

    For those who exercise early in the day, the thought of skipping breakfast should be daunting.

    Take professional athlete Kristin Armstrong for example. Armstrong is a world-champion cyclist, and breakfast is a regular part of her daily training routine. “Eating breakfast sets you and your body up for a successful day. It kick-starts your body and gets your engine running,” said Armstrong.

    Armstrong’s routine is to eat something before and after workouts. “After 60 to 90 minutes of aerobic exercise, your glycogen levels become depleted; it is important to refuel these energy stores if your training session is longer than this,” she said.

    Breakfast may help improve cognitive ability

    According to research published in the US National Library of Medicine, “Evidence suggests that breakfast consumption may improve cognitive function related to memory, test grades, and school attendance.” 

    Breakfast may help us avoid unhealthy foods later

    When our bodies don’t have the necessary nutrients from breakfast, high-caloric foods become increasingly more appealing, according to a study published in Medical News Today. Those high-calorie foods often don’t contain the other nutrients our bodies need to function well and can lead to a decline in overall health. 

    While it’s tempting to skip breakfast when we feel rushed or don’t plan ahead, missing this important meal can have serious, negative effects on our overall health. As we train our bodies to expect breakfast, we can expect to feel better and improve well-being.
