7 Sleep Tips for a New School Year
Sleep is just as important as food, drink, and safety. Make sure your kids are getting enough sleep now that school has started.
Sleep plays a role in being alert or drowsy, stressed or relaxed, and that may in turn affect temperament, learning and social behavior. Start with some of these tips:
1. Set the time to go to sleep incrementally earlier each night. This can be done even if school has started. Set an alarm or timer to alert kids that it's time to start winding down.
2. Maintain a sleep schedule. Once a sleep schedule is established, do the best you can to stick to it. This is much easier with younger kids and more challenging with teens—especially on the weekends.
3. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Perhaps start with a bath then read a story, or consider having your children read on their own at night if they are capable.
