Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to stay inside all winter, but it does mean that you need to plan ahead and be careful while you’re outside. You can even stay fit with winter activities—and have fun while you’re at it.

If you do plan on spending time outdoors this winter, maximize your comfort by wearing appropriate gear. By using the layering technique, you can adapt to both your activity level and changing weather conditions by simply adding or removing a layer.

Layer 1: A thin synthetic layer to manage moisture. Avoid cotton as your base layer as you want a wicking material next to your skin that will move perspiration away.

Layer 2: A lightweight and warm layer. This layer provides insulation and retains heat. Wool, fleece, and down are good insulators.

Layer 3: A shell to protect from the elements. This third layer will protect you from potential rain, snow, wind, and general cold conditions. Look for a shell that is waterproof and breathable. Getting wet makes you more vulnerable in cold weather, and you may not be able to keep your core temperature high enough without this important layer.

Don’t forget to protect your head, hands, and ears with proper winter and safety gear. Grab your gloves or mittens, and wear thick thermal socks or two pairs of regular socks—you will likely need winter shoes that are a half-size bigger than you normally wear. Bring your helmet, hat, and a headband to protect your head and ears.

Now that you know how to bundle up properly, pick a spot to head for some winter fun! We asked, and you delivered your favorite sledding spots in this list:
