October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among all women worldwide. But the good news is that breast cancer death rates have been on the decline since 1989. The decline is believed to be the result of early detection, regular screenings, and increased awareness. We don’t know what exactly causes breast cancer, but it is linked to some lifestyle risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, and a poor diet.

We can all play a part in reducing the instances of breast cancer—it starts with taking care of ourselves. Women ages 40 and older should have a mammogram every year, and women in their twenties and thirties should have a clinical breast exam performed by a health professional as part of a regular health exam, preferably every three years.

While we can’t completely prevent breast cancer, we do have control over risk factors like body weight, physical activity, and our diets. Research shows that a poor diet and not being active are two key factors that can increase a person’s risk of cancer. The prevention can be simple—add some veggies to your next meal and get outside and walk your dog (your dog will also thank you).
