The One Thing You Don’t Know about Intermountain Healthcare

As a subsidiary of Intermountain Healthcare, we’re part of one of the nation’s top-ranked integrated health systems.

Walk into any Intermountain hospital or clinic and you’ll see doctors, nurses, and staff helping patients get the care they need. But what’s going on behind the scenes?

Find out why being a not-for-profit help Intermountain give back.Internally, we’re focused on how we can go beyond treating illness and injury to encourage healthy behaviors that lead to longer, more fulfilling lives. It’s part of our overall mission as a not-for-profit healthcare system. That’s right—we’re not-for-profit, and it affects how we make decisions.

We operate without obligations to shareholders, focusing instead on our patients and what the community needs, and we are continually seeking ways to improve our services and care. In fact, improving quality often lowers our revenue, but it also decreases suffering and saves lives, and that’s our goal.

Here are a few of the ways being not-for-profit helps the community:

  • Serving those in need – In 2013, we donated more than $280 million in financial assistance to those unable to pay—about 275,000 cases. We also support 25 community and school-based clinics that provide 325,000 clinic visits annually to children and families in under-served areas.

  • Keeping costs down – The cost of healthcare continues to grow, and we understand that the best care in the world isn’t good enough if no one can afford it. We’ve been recognized for our achievements in providing excellent outcomes to patients at costs that are among the lowest in the country.

  • Being good stewards of resources – Regardless of local or national economic challenges, we have to be prepared to provide excellent services. This means operating efficiently, eliminating waste, innovating with a long-term view, and implementing fair policies that ensure those who can pay do, so that we can preserve our ability to help those in need.
