I have long been an admirer of the work you do and all that you have accomplished. St. Luke’s is a much younger health system—we are celebrating our eighth birthday this month—but we have a much in common: passionate leadership, dedicated physicians and employees, and devoted community volunteers who are committed to trying to improve the health of our communities, providing the very best care possible, and driving more and more value for our healthcare services.
We realized that if we were going to transform healthcare for the people of Idaho, northern Nevada, and eastern Oregon that we serve, we needed to have an insurance company partnership, as opposed to a more common contracting relationship. We needed an insurance company that we could have a trusting relationship with, an aligned vision of what we are trying to achieve, and a collaboration in which we would share data, best practices, and ideas for improvement.
After reviewing options, it became clear that SelectHealth was the right partner for us. In September of 2012, St. Luke’s announced our strategic alliance on my blog.
Since that time, it has only become more and more clear that we made the right choice. Premium increases in Idaho have been blunted with the addition of SelectHealth to the market. Businesses are excited about what we are doing for their employees in partnership—the value that people receive when healthcare providers and an insurance company actually work together to improve health, improve care, and lower costs.
In the short time we have been offering SelectHealth insurance products through St. Luke’s Health System, we have consistently exceeded enrollment targets. SelectHealth was the second-leading insurance company on the Idaho health insurance exchange—a remarkable achievement in just the first year of exchange offerings.
St. Luke’s Health System recently was named a Top 15 Health System by Truven Health Analytics. We have a long way to go to accomplish all that we want to, but we are convinced that our partnership with SelectHealth has helped us be better at what we do.
