Feeling Moody? You May Be Dehydrated

Here’s how I noticed I was dehydrated—with a text from my husband. And here are my tips to avoid more situations like this one.

Here’s part of a recent text message conversation I had with my husband.

Me: “Sorry about being grouchy.”

Me: “I have a bad attitude today. I’m sure you haven’t noticed.”

Husband: “Not at all! Or, yes I have! Which one won’t get me yelled at?”

Me: “Neither. You’re doomed.”

I won’t deny my unpleasantness. A few hours later, an email from the American Council on Exercise showed up in my inbox that piqued my curiosity: Feeling Cranky? Drink Up. So, really, it’s not my fault! I’m just dehydrated. Although, I must get dehydrated quite often. But, that’s another story.

Why Water Is Important

According to ACE, if your energy is low and you can’t seem to escape the dark cloud feeling, you may be dehydrated. Even mild dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, and adverse mood. It may also decrease your motivation to participate in moderate exercise and could hinder other daily activities that do not require a lot of physical demand. 

Staying hydrated is not only likely to improve your mood, water can provide these benefits:

  • Reduce hunger
  • Flush out toxins
  • Improve your complexion
  • Aid in digestion
  • Relieve headaches (commonly caused by dehydration)

How Much Water Do I Need?

The recommendation is different for everyone, based on height, weight, and activity level. In general, you should drink one-half to one ounce of water for each pound you weigh every day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.

An easy way to know if you’re hydrated is to check your urine. If your urine is light yellow (think the color of lemonade), then you’re in good shape. If it’s darker yellow such as the color of apple juice, you’re dehydrated.
