Health Hero Talmage Cleverly Shares His Goal of Staying Connected to Family

As part of our employee-sponsored wellness program, my goal for the first quarter of 2016 was to live more connected with my family.

When my parents moved to Omaha, Nebraska for two years, most of my older siblings lost our connection with each other because our mom wasn’t around to organize family dinners and other activities.  After my parents moved back to Utah, I realized that during their absence, my family had built a habit of not seeing or talking to each other.

I decided to set a goal to talk to my parents or a sibling at least once a week for a month. I would to talk to them in person, by phone, via Skype, or anything “live”—Facebook or text messages didn’t count.

I was able to reconnect with my sister and her daughter in California, with whom I share an interest in writing fiction. We soon found ourselves collaborating long distance, and we decided to create a writing course for elementary age writers and their parents.

During our weekly discussions for the writing course, we used that time to talk about any updates within our family, to help us feel more connected—despite living in two different states.
