Six Tips for Staying Safe on Your Bike

    Man with bike and helmet

Riding a bike is a fun and easy way to get around, plus it’s a great way to get some exercise. But staying safe takes more than just wearing a helmet. Follow these six steps before your next ride.

Follow the Rules

Be sure to yield to pedestrians and follow traffic signs and signals. Ride in the direction of traffic. If you’re bike has a bell, use it to signal your presence. Do not wear more than one earphone while riding.

Plan Your Trip

Before you ride, plan where you will go to follow the safest route. Think about your final destination and where you will store your bike when you arrive.

Do a Pre-Ride Check

Check the bike’s tire pressure, test the bell, and make sure that your front and rear lights are illuminated.

Be Predictable

Make it easy for the other traffic around you. Don’t make unexpected turns that put yourself and others in danger. Ride at a steady pace so other vehicles can anticipate your movement.

Wear a Helmet

Always wear a helmet and buckle the strap. If you are in a crash or see damage, it’s time to replace your helmet.

Tips for Turns

Pay attention to the cars and bikes around you. Use hand signals to let drivers and other cyclists know when you are planning on turning or stopping.
