Obesity in children is on the rise. The Utah Department of Health reported that, in 2008, 21.5 percent of elementary school students were at an unhealthy weight. There was a dramatic increase in the percentage of overweight or obese students between the 3rd and 5th grades. According to the Utah Department of Health, about 22.5 percent of elementary-age children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.

Researchers have found a strong relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement. Children who are active are more likely to have improved concentration, be more attentive, and earn higher grades.

For these reasons, SelectHealth is committed to helping families be more active and healthy. We are partnering with Utah elementary schools to promote and provide opportunities for physical activity.
