Expansion of Dependent Coverage
The recent passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) requires all
grandfathered and
non-grandfathered employer and individual plans to cover dependent
children up to age 26.
SelectHealth currently covers unmarried children younger than age 26 who rely on the subscriber for more than half of their financial support. Effective May 1, 2010, we made the following changes to this policy:
- Covered dependents will not be removed from the subscriber’s policy for any reason other than reaching age 26, or upon the request of the subscriber. Coverage will be terminated at the end of the month in which the dependent child turns 26.
- Dependent children younger than age 26 who are not currently enrolled on a subscriber’s plan will be eligible to enroll for coverage on or after October 1, 2010, at the plan’s renewal.
NOTE: Self-funded plans are not required to make these changes until the plan year beginning on or after October 1, 2010. However, these changes may be implemented earlier at the employer’s request.
